URSU presents Quentin Tarantino
Support the bursary fund, watch Pulp Fiction
by Nathan Lane
Hello out there U of R students. Undoubtedly, in their two previous Carillon write-ups, VP Internal Kyall Glennie and VP Student Affairs Leah Sharpe have told you about our upcoming events, critically important information, and generally just kept you in the loop about what’s going down on campus. This week I, VP Projects and Development Nathan Lane, will attempt to follow suit.
Our first upcoming event is the Western Canadian Music Awards and I hope you’ve already heard about this somewhere else. However, if you haven’t please climb out from under that rock and read this very carefully. On Friday the 26 and Saturday the 27 one of the largest live music events ever in Regina will be invading the Lazy Owl. On Friday night, MuchMusic will be on location taping a showcase performance, featuring burthe8track, Sylvie, Hot Little Rocket, and Touchstone Gurus. On Saturday night, the Owl will be rockin’ with a hip-hop show featuring SOSO, Shadez, Souls in Rhythm, and Mood Ruff. Also, a little birdie told me that one of Canada’s hottest hip-hop acts will be a special guest. You can figure out who they are by showing up!
Everybody’s always told you that doing a good deed for your fellow man is a great thing to do right? Well, here’s your chance. On October 2nd, URSU will be partnering with Galaxy Cinemas to present a Quentin Tarantino movie festival. Students will be able to see three Quentin Tarantino films at a discounted price. I suppose you’re asking yourself, how does going to a cool movie help a fellow student? Well, let me tell you– Galaxy Cinemas and the Students’ Union have come to an agreement which will see all of the proceeds for this event going to the Students’ Union Emergency Bursary Fund. For those of you who don’t know, the Emergency Bursary Fund is in desperate need of money because this year’s funds have already been exhausted. In case you haven’t understood the underlying message here, I’ll give you it in one line: Come out and check out the Tarantino movie festival; it’s going to be fun and it’s going to help students here at the U of R. It makes sense, doesn’t it?
If you’ve managed to read this article up to here, congrats, you’ve won a prize! The prize is that you are one of the lucky students who is about to find out about the event that URSU will be holding on October 3. URSU, Luther, Kinesiology & Health Studies, Engineering and Education Students’ Societies are holding a Regina Pats hockey night. For the low, low price of just $8, you can get a bus trip to and from the Regina Pats game, prizes, and a chance to spend time with local celebrity, Phoebe De Ciman. (She’s that girl from the Cougars. Come on, you know her!) Tickets are available through all of the groups mentioned above.
I hope to see you out at all of these events, until then, keep your stick on the ice, your ear to the ground, your nose to the grindstone, and [insert cliché of your choice here.]
Oops, I almost forgot to mention that the 2003 Shine Day, part of the Shienrama Campaign, was this past Saturday. URSU would like to thank its sponsors, Coca Cola, the City of Regina, the U of R Alumni Association and Rawlco Radio as well as the student volunteers who gave up their precious time to help out! The volunteers were able to raise over $1,400 that will go directly to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation! So far the campaign has raised close to $4,000, and with a few more activities planned the 2003 URSU Shinerama campaign is sure to raise even more funds for a great cause.
