Exercise your mind, win free beer
–––

The Arts Student Association (ASA) hosts their Pub Trivia every second Wednesday at the Lazy Owl, and if you have the smarts, you can win some great drinkable prizes.

Whoever gets the most correct answers after each round of questions gets a free pitcher of beer. People can sign up as teams, or if feeling especially adventurous, play on their own. The ASA pays for everything, but the Owl lets them use the space.

The ASA began hosting their Trivia Challenge at the beginning of the year, and have met a fairly enthusiastic response. Alexis Losie, one of the Owl’s employees, said “turnout has been good” and the questions seem to be “quite difficult.”

Lindsay Jorgenson, a member of the Arts Student Association, said the questions are created by a different guest professor each week, and the professors get to ask all the questions. The questions can be about anything, and usually draw from a “wide variety” of categories such as geography, art or pop culture.

According to Jorgenson, “every professor is different,” so every week offers new challenges.

Jorgenson said the ASA is “really pushing for professors to do it,” and is asking for professors to “just come by and check it out” to see how it is conducted and if it something they would be interested in. Profs are encouraged to play if they want, although they are not encouraged to stack their teams in order to win all the beer. The ASA is planning to run their Pub Trivia until the end of the year, so they are hoping they get enough support from the faculty to keep going with it.

Jorgenson assured you don’t have to be an arts student to play Pub Trivia. In fact, having a broad base of knowledge on your team seems to help. Jorgenson said “every group usually has one really smart person,” so things seem to even out.

Virgil Thomson, an Arts student who has attended the Pub Trivia, said “the groups are actually large enough that everyone knows something.”

“There are no fist fights, but there is actually very spirited competition.”

Thomson said the trivia “combines [his] love of drinking and of knowledge.”

Pub Trivia offers the best of both worlds. It’s a great opportunity to stimulate and lose brain cells at the same time!

The ASA is also in the process of planning their “Amazing Race.” Tentatively booked for November 19 at 3:30 p.m., teams will start at the U of R and complete a massive scavenger hunt around Regina. It will offer friendly competition as well as a way for people to get to know the city a little better. The all-ages event promises to be an exciting one. Jorgenson said there will be “amazing prizes” and the possibility of pizza and refreshments after the event.
