Sex and the single girl
Christmas ex-boyfriends

Christmas cheer and ex-boyfriends. Spread the glee.
–––
I’m not the kind of girl who keeps a “boyfriend box” or saves Christmas presents from old boyfriends. My boyfriend relics are usually much more covert. Usually I burn the evidence–the pictures, the cards, and the letters. Yet certain smells, movies, and songs all can resurrect the death of my past relationships and are much more dangerous than running across a picture that missed getting torched. Christmas time is no exception. On the verge of spending another Christmas boyfriendless, I get wistful and reminiscent about my past relationships.
Christmas time is particularly torturous when you don’t have anybody to share it with. There is so much romance associated with Christmas time. Something about sitting in front of a fire and watching tree lights twinkle really set the mood for a special time. Sleigh rides, skating, and going for walks together in freshly fallen snow can be incredibly romantic. When you are single and you see couples holding hands and cavorting around in the snow it kind of makes you miss having someone to act like a moron with. When a holiday with the magnitude of Christmas comes along why are we made to feel bad about ourselves if we aren’t in a relationship?
Having a boyfriend at this festive time of year can be incredibly stressful. Gift giving can be the most anxiety-ridden experience for relationships. Gifts can show how serious you are or exactly how serious you aren’t. And then there is that insatiable need to find out exactly how much the other person spent so you don’t wind up looking like a tool by overspending or underspending. Do you really want to worry about looking too cheap or too serious? It’s freaking Christmas time–with all the stress of school and finals we are all under, do you really want to have to worry about something else?
Christmas shouldn’t be a time for stress or to make you feel bad. Christmas time is the time of parties with open bars, mistletoe, fantastic food, and Boxing Day sales. Get out there and enjoy yourself and if you do see one of those sappy couples holding hands and acting all mushy in the snow, you do not need to resist the urge to pelt them with snowballs.
