Gov't addresses student debt

The long-awaited release of a report on student loans in the province took place last week. The provincial government has been holding onto the report since last fall, while it has been formulating its response. Despite being vaguely worded with few concrete answers, the government's response delivered by Post-Secondary Minister Joanne Crofford agreed with many of the task group's recommendations. One of the problems the government promises to work on, for example, is the debt level of certain students such as single mothers. The Student Assistance Task Group was created by Saskatchewan's former Minister of Education Bob Mitchell in the fall of 1996 to examine the issues of student loans and debt. Bob McCulloch, a U of R administrator who sat on the Task Force, was happy with the positive nature of the government's response. "It was a good initial reaction," he said. "It took a while, but it was positive."
