Dr. Don says he's too busy
Too busy, that was the reason that University of Regina President Don Wells gave to a Carillon reporter when asked why he was not one of this year's Team Canada members on their trip to Asia. And once again Dr. Wells is showing that he does not have the U of R's best interests in mind.
Last year at this time, Dr. Wells and officials from 12 other universities and colleges were breaking new ground in Southeast Asia on the first Team Canada trip. Wells and his associates were trying to encourage students to come to Canada and study at our institutes of higher learning.
As you read this editorial, there are over 20 universities and colleges on this year's Team Canada trip trying to get more business from a booming Asian market. However, the U of R is not represented this time simply because Dr. Wells is busy.
Of course, Dr. Wells never sent someone in his place. Why should he? The U of R does not need any additional foreign students that pay four times more tuition than any local student would. The U of R would only need more money if it was having financial problems.
Unfortunately, you cannot say that is the first mistake that Wells has made. Over the last two years, we have seen him continuously soil the integrity of this institution.
- The U of R lost 2 million dollars in the Olympia and York bankruptcy. If the TSE Building in Toronto does eventually sell, the U of R may get a million dollars back.
-Tuition. It keeps going up, but the University Administration fails to justify the reason for it. Students still have another four years of tuition raises to look forward to.
- A golden handshake will be offered to 114 professors. Nobody knows how many will take the early retirement package. Nobody knows if these positions will ever be filled.
Students and profs should ask themselves one question: If you continuously screwed up at your job, would you still be employed?
Well, Don Wells still has his.
And for some reason the administration thought that Wells deserved a $12,000 raise for all the work that he has done. What would the administration give him if he actually did his job?
Maybe Dr. Don should look in the mirror when hešs searching for his next golden handshake victim.
